New Test Rod for Bone Conductive Hearing Loss instruments

Technology Consultant Paul Harris from the Ewing Foundation has been contributing to the development of an innovative new bone conduction test rod to allow professionals in education and parents of young people to monitor types of Bone Conduction hearing aids. For the past year, Paul has been working with audiology specialist supplier Graham Bath to create the improved device.

It is compatible with both the Oticon Medical and Cochlear Bone Anchored/Conductive devices. Known colloquially as ‘the glowstick’, orders for the Bath and Harris Test Rod (BHTR) can be placed directly with Rubi Audiology from September 2022 or local authorities receiving support and training can order through the Ewing Foundation.

‘There are many advantages to using the BHTR,’ says Paul. ‘It is affordable, easy to hold, easy to clean, and, because of its additional length, can be positioned close to the ear canal for better clarity and reduced acoustic feedback.’

He also notes that the BHTR’s bright colour makes it difficult to lose! The first batch of BHTR will retail at under £40 each and a donation will be made to the Ewing Foundation to support their work with deaf children, young people and their teachers.

The Ewing Foundation is a national charity, promoting inclusion and achievement for deaf children through listening and speaking.
